What is GB WhatsApp?
GB WhatsApp is an unofficial, modified version of WhatsApp. It is built by an independent development team — originally a developer known as Omar GB, and now maintained under the name HeyMods. Underneath, it runs the same messaging core as the official app: the same end-to-end encryption for your chats, the same interface you already know. The difference is roughly 200 additional features layered on top — features Meta has chosen not to add to the official client.
A few things worth being clear about. GB WhatsApp is not available on the Google Play Store. You install it by sideloading the APK manually, which is normal for modded apps but means you should only download it from a source you trust. Meta does not officially endorse modified clients, so historically there was a ban risk. The 2026 builds — including the current v18.80 — ship with a reworked anti-ban layer that has held up reliably in real-world use, but no modded app can promise a zero-risk guarantee, and we won't pretend otherwise.
If you want the one-line summary: GB WhatsApp is WhatsApp with the privacy and customisation controls most users have been asking for, packaged as a standalone APK. Around 90 million people use it daily, with India being one of the largest markets. If you are new to this, start with our step-by-step install guide — it takes about two minutes.

Why do millions of people install GB WhatsApp?
It is rarely about themes. The recurring reasons people give come down to control, flexibility, and a few limits the official app keeps in place.
Real privacy control
Hide online status, blue ticks, typing and recording — selectively, per chat. The single biggest reason people switch.
Two numbers, one phone
Run a personal and a work number in the same app with separate notifications, no clone app needed.
Make it yours
A 4,000+ theme store, custom fonts and chat bubbles — the personalisation the official app removed.
Fewer limits
Send files up to ~1 GB, post 7-minute status videos, and skip heavy photo compression.
Useful automation
Schedule messages and set auto-replies — handy for greetings, reminders and small businesses.
Maintained & scanned
Frequent updates with current anti-ban, and every build we host is VirusTotal-scanned before release.
Key features the official app doesn't have
Each feature below includes exactly where to find it in Settings — so this list doubles as a quick setup guide. See all 200+ features.
-
Hide Online Status & Blue Ticks
Stay invisible while reading. Contacts won’t see "online" or the blue double-tick, even after you open their chat.
Settings → Privacy → Hide Online Status
-
Anti-Delete Messages & Status
See messages and status updates even after the sender taps "delete for everyone". No more "this message was deleted".
Settings → Privacy → Anti-Delete Messages
-
Ghost Mode
One toggle hides your online presence, typing, and recording indicators together — a master privacy switch.
Settings → Privacy → Ghost Mode
-
Dual / Multiple Accounts
Run two WhatsApp numbers on one phone without a clone app. Separate notifications for personal and work.
Settings → Accounts → Add Account
-
4,000+ Themes
A built-in theme store changes the entire look — colours, chat bubbles, icons. Match it to your home screen.
Settings → Theme Store
-
Larger File & Media Sharing
Send files up to ~1 GB instead of 100 MB, and share higher-resolution photos without heavy compression.
Works automatically when attaching files
-
Message Scheduler
Write a message now and have it send automatically at a set time — birthday wishes, reminders, recurring messages.
Settings → Scheduled Messages → New
-
Auto-Reply
Set automatic replies when you’re busy or away — like an out-of-office for WhatsApp, per contact or all chats.
Settings → Auto Reply
-
DND Mode
Cut WhatsApp’s internet while keeping the rest of your phone online. Stops notifications without muting every chat.
Top toolbar → DND icon
-
Status & Story Downloader
Save any contact’s photo or video status straight to your gallery — no screen recording or extra app.
Open status → Download icon
-
Increased Status Limit
Post status videos up to 7 minutes (instead of 30 seconds) and longer text statuses without splitting clips.
Works automatically when posting status
-
Built-in App Lock
Lock the app with a PIN, pattern, or fingerprint — no separate locker app needed if you share your phone.
Settings → Privacy → App Lock

What I actually think about GB WhatsApp, after six months of daily use
An honest, independent six-month review.
I switched to GB WhatsApp about six months ago, mostly because I was tired of the blue ticks. People had started screenshotting my last-seen and asking why I hadn’t replied yet — a small thing, but a constant low-grade pressure. A friend mentioned the mod, I checked the hash on this page, installed it on a Sunday afternoon, and that was that. Six months later I’m still on it.
The feature I didn’t expect to use as much as I do is the message scheduler. I thought it would be a novelty. It turns out to be the setting I open most often — birthday wishes that drop at midnight, work follow-ups queued for 9 AM, a goodnight message to my parents when I know I’ll be asleep before they are. The official WhatsApp does not do this. Once you have it, you wonder why Meta has not added it in fifteen years.
The privacy controls alone are worth the install. Themes are a nice-to-have I did not end up using as much as I thought I would.
Now the honest part. The anti-ban thing is not bulletproof. I got one 24-hour temporary ban about three months in — it happened on a random Tuesday for no reason I could pin down, and lifted on its own by the next morning. Annoying, not catastrophic. I have not been banned since, and I don’t message any differently than I did on the official client. So the risk is real, just smaller than the internet makes it sound.
Would I recommend GB WhatsApp to a friend? Yes, with two caveats. If your account is critical to your job or business — the kind of account where a 24-hour outage costs you money — stay on the official client. The risk is small but the cost of being unlucky is high. For everyone else, give it a try. You can switch back in five minutes if you don’t like it. You won’t.
The verdict: Worth installing for the privacy controls and the file-size limit. Skip it if your account cannot afford even a small ban risk.

What "safe" actually means here
We would rather explain our verification honestly than show a badge that means nothing. Here is exactly what we check — and what it does and doesn't prove.
VirusTotal
Every hosted APK is uploaded to VirusTotal and the report link is published. Current v18.80 build: 64/64 engines clean.
Google Play Protect
The app installs and runs with Play Protect active; you may see a standard "unknown app" prompt, which is normal for any non-Play Store APK.
File integrity
The exact file you download is the one we scanned — no ad-injected redirects or third-party repackaging.
What it does NOT mean
A clean scan confirms the file is not malware. It does not make the app official, and it does not remove the inherent risk of using an unofficial client. We state this plainly rather than hide it.
Current build v18.80 — VirusTotal scan 64/64 engines clean, last checked 22 May 2026.
View the VirusTotal report ↗How to back up and restore your GB WhatsApp chats
Do this before installing or updating and you will never lose your message history.
- 1
Back up on your current app
On official WhatsApp: Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → Back Up. This writes a local backup to your device storage.
- 2
Note the same number
Restore only works if GB WhatsApp uses the same phone number as the backup.
- 3
Install GB WhatsApp
Follow the install guide, then verify your number with the OTP.
- 4
Restore when prompted
During first launch GB WhatsApp detects the local backup and offers Restore — tap it before completing setup.
- 5
Future backups
Inside GB WhatsApp: Settings → Chats → Backup. Keep a periodic local backup so you never lose history during an update.

GB WhatsApp: Pros & Cons
Pros
- Genuine privacy controls (online status, ticks, ghost mode)
- Dual accounts without a clone app
- Larger file sharing (~1 GB) and longer status
- Built-in scheduler, auto-reply, status downloader
- Free, no ads in the app itself
- Frequent updates with current anti-ban
Cons
- Not on Play Store — manual APK install and updates
- No official Meta support; small inherent account risk
- Slightly larger app size and battery use than official
- Updates must be installed manually when a new version drops
Our take: for most users the privacy and dual-account features outweigh the manual-update inconvenience — but if you run a critical business number, keep that one on the official app.
Common Problems & Fixes
"App not installed" error
An older version is usually still installed. Uninstall any existing GB WhatsApp first, then reinstall — your chats stay safe if you backed up.
Installation blocked by Play Protect
Tap "Install anyway", or temporarily disable Play Protect under Play Store → Profile → Play Protect → Settings.
Account banned / "you need the official app"
Don’t log in repeatedly. Switch to the latest v18.80 build (current anti-ban) and consider a secondary number for the modded client.
Messages not sending
Check DND mode isn’t on (top toolbar), confirm internet access, and allow background data for the app.
Backup not restoring
The backup must be from the same number, and the file should be in local storage (Database folder), not only Google Drive.
App keeps crashing after update
Clear cache (Settings → Apps → GB WhatsApp → Storage → Clear Cache). If it persists, reinstall the latest APK over the existing app.
No update notification
GB WhatsApp can’t auto-update via Play Store. Check this page or Settings → Updates inside the app, then install the new APK manually.
Themes not applying
Restart the app after applying a theme. If a downloaded theme fails, re-download it from the Theme Store rather than importing manually.
More edge cases are covered in our full troubleshooting guide.
What people who switched have to say
Short notes from regular GB WhatsApp users across Latin America. Different cities, different reasons to install, same takeaway: once you have it on your phone, going back to vanilla WhatsApp feels weirdly restrictive.

The questions searchers ask most
Straight answers to the exact things people type into Google about GB WhatsApp.
Is GB WhatsApp safe to use?
The APK on this page is VirusTotal-clean (64/64 engines). It is still an unofficial client, so a small account-ban risk remains — clean file, but not zero risk.
Read the full safety guideWhich is the official GB WhatsApp website?
There is no single official site — GB WhatsApp is a mod, not a company product. Trust a source that publishes a VirusTotal scan, states the version, and is honest about ban risk.
How to verify a downloadWhere can I download an old version like 17.30 or 17.55?
Old builds still circulate, but older anti-ban gets flagged faster — we recommend the latest v18.80 instead. The version history lists every release for reference.
See version historyCan I get GB WhatsApp on APKPure or Uptodown?
Those sites carry APKs, but mod listings there are often outdated or repackaged. Use a source that publishes a scan for the exact file you download.
What is GB WhatsApp Business?
A modded version of WhatsApp Business — business tools (catalogs, quick replies) plus the GB WhatsApp privacy and theme features.
How do I install GB WhatsApp?
Download the APK, allow "install unknown apps" for your browser, tap Install, then verify your number. The full walkthrough takes about two minutes.
Open the install guideFrequently Asked Questions
Is GB WhatsApp safe?
The APK we host is VirusTotal-clean (64/64). It is still an unofficial app, so use a trusted source and consider a secondary number.
Will my account get banned?
The v18.80 build has reworked anti-ban and bans are now rare with the latest version. No modded app can guarantee zero risk, so a backup number is safest.
Is GB WhatsApp free?
Yes, completely free with no in-app ads.
What's the latest version?
v18.80, released 17 May 2026. Always install the newest build for the current anti-ban layer.
Does it work without root?
Yes. No root needed — it is a normal APK sideload.
Can I use my regular number?
Yes. You can use your existing WhatsApp number, or a second number for separation.
Will I lose my chats if I switch?
No, if you back up first (Settings → Chats → Chat Backup) and restore during setup.
Can I run GB WhatsApp and official WhatsApp together?
Yes, with two different numbers — one on each app.
Why isn't it on the Play Store?
Google Play does not allow modified versions of existing apps, so it is distributed as an APK.
Does GB WhatsApp have end-to-end encryption?
Yes, message encryption works the same as the official app.
How do I update GB WhatsApp?
Download the latest APK from this page and install it over the existing app — no need to uninstall.
What Android version do I need?
Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher.
Does it work on iPhone?
There is no official iOS build. We cover the realistic options on our iOS page.
Can I use it on PC?
Yes, via an Android emulator. Steps are on our GB WhatsApp for PC guide.
Is GB WhatsApp safe in 2026?
The hosted v18.80 APK is VirusTotal-clean (64/64 engines, scanned 17 May 2026). That confirms no malware in this exact file. It does not certify the app as official — GB WhatsApp is an unofficial mod, so a small inherent ban risk remains. For critical accounts, stay on the official client; for everyone else, use a trusted source like this one and consider a secondary number.
How is GB WhatsApp different from FM WhatsApp and WhatsApp Plus?
All three are unofficial mods that add similar privacy and theming features. GB WhatsApp (HeyMods) has the largest user base and the most frequent anti-ban updates. FM WhatsApp (Fouad) is a close sibling with very similar features. WhatsApp Plus focuses on theme customisation. Day-to-day feature parity is high; differences are mostly update cadence and UI polish. See our /vs/fm-whatsapp/ and /vs/whatsapp-plus/ pages for full comparisons.
Why is GB WhatsApp not on the Google Play Store?
Google Play policy forbids modified clients of existing apps. Because GB WhatsApp re-packages and extends the official WhatsApp client, it cannot be distributed through Play. That is why it ships as a sideloaded APK and updates have to be installed manually.
Can WhatsApp detect GB WhatsApp?
Meta can in some cases detect that a non-official client is connecting to the WhatsApp servers, which is why temporary bans occasionally happen. The v18.80 build includes reworked anti-ban that masks more of the modded signature, but no mod can promise zero detection. The safer pattern is: use the latest build, do not sign in and out repeatedly, and avoid spammy behaviour.
Does GB WhatsApp work with WhatsApp Business?
You cannot run both on the same number — WhatsApp only allows one client per number at a time. You can run GB WhatsApp on one number and WhatsApp Business on a different number, on the same phone, since GB WhatsApp supports dual accounts.
Will I lose end-to-end encryption with GB WhatsApp?
No. GB WhatsApp uses the same Signal-protocol end-to-end encryption as the official client. Message contents in transit are encrypted the same way. The trust question is about the client itself (unofficial vs official), not about the encryption pipeline.
How often is GB WhatsApp updated?
New builds typically ship every 4-8 weeks. Major builds focus on the anti-ban layer and Android version compatibility; minor builds fix bugs and refine features. See /versions/ for the full release history.
Do I need to uninstall WhatsApp before installing GB WhatsApp?
No. They install as two separate apps with two different package names, so they co-exist on the same device. Each must be registered to a different phone number.
Can I transfer my chats from official WhatsApp to GB WhatsApp?
Yes. Before installing, back up on official WhatsApp (Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → Back Up). After installing GB WhatsApp and verifying the same number, the app will detect the local backup and offer Restore. The full procedure is on /backup-restore/.
Is GB WhatsApp legal?
Using a modded client is not illegal in most jurisdictions, but it does violate WhatsApp’s Terms of Service. The enforcement Meta uses for this is account-level (temporary or permanent bans), not legal action against users. Distribution of modified APKs may have its own legal considerations depending on country.
Does GB WhatsApp share my data with third parties?
GB WhatsApp claims the same data model as the official app — no third-party sharing beyond what WhatsApp itself does. We have no way to fully audit a closed-source binary, so this remains a trust statement, not a verified fact. The VirusTotal scan rules out known malware signatures but cannot prove the absence of data collection.
Why is the APK 78 MB when official WhatsApp is smaller?
GB WhatsApp ships with the full theme engine, additional language packs, the scheduler, auto-reply, status downloader, and the modded settings UI baked in. The official WhatsApp uses Play Store delta updates to keep the install size lower. After install both apps end up with similar runtime storage usage.
What happens if my account gets banned?
For a temporary ban, wait it out (usually 24 hours) — do not try to log in repeatedly, which can extend the ban. After the ban lifts, install the very latest GB WhatsApp build (current anti-ban) before signing back in, or use the official client to ride out the period. Permanent bans are rare and usually preceded by warnings; if it happens, switching to a fresh number on the official client is the only recovery path.
Can I use GB WhatsApp on a tablet?
Yes, on Android tablets with phone-number registration capability. There is no GB WhatsApp Web client — to mirror on a tablet without a SIM, use the official WhatsApp Web feature on GB WhatsApp (Settings → Linked Devices), same as the official app.
Why does Play Protect warn me when I install GB WhatsApp?
Play Protect flags any app installed outside the Play Store. This is a generic warning, not a malware detection — it appears for every sideloaded APK, including ones from APKMirror, F-Droid, etc. You can verify our specific build via the VirusTotal link on the download page and tap "Install anyway" if you are satisfied.
Where are GB WhatsApp messages stored on my phone?
Local chat database is stored at /Internal Storage/GBWhatsApp/Databases/ (encrypted with .crypt format). Media goes to /Internal Storage/GBWhatsApp/Media/. The location mirrors the official app’s structure under a different parent folder, which is why both apps can co-exist without overlapping data.
Can I download GB WhatsApp from APKPure or Uptodown?
APKPure and Uptodown host APKs, but because GB WhatsApp is a modified client, listings there are inconsistent, often outdated, and sometimes repackaged with extra ad SDKs. We recommend downloading from a source that publishes a VirusTotal report for the exact file — the build on this page is scanned before every release. Whichever source you use, verify the file hash matches a published scan.
Where can I get old versions of GB WhatsApp like 17.30 or 17.55?
Old builds (v17.30, v17.55, etc.) still circulate on APK archive sites, but we deliberately do not host them. Older versions ship an older anti-ban layer, so they get flagged faster and raise your ban risk. Our /versions/ page lists the release history for reference; the download always points to the current v18.80 build, which is the safest choice.
Should I use an old version of GB WhatsApp?
No, not unless you have a specific reason. Each GB WhatsApp release refreshes the anti-ban layer to match changes Meta makes server-side. An old APK runs an outdated anti-ban signature, which is exactly what gets accounts flagged. The only honest recommendation is to install the latest build and update when a new one ships.
What is GB WhatsApp Business?
GB WhatsApp Business is a modded version of WhatsApp Business — it adds the same privacy and customisation features as GB WhatsApp on top of business tools like catalogs, quick replies, and away messages. If you want business features plus mod features, that is the variant to look for. Alternatively, run GB WhatsApp on a personal number and official WhatsApp Business on a separate number, since GB WhatsApp supports dual accounts.
What is the difference between GB WhatsApp and Alex mod?
Alex Mods (AlexMODS) is another WhatsApp mod maintained by a different developer. Feature-wise it overlaps heavily with GB WhatsApp — privacy toggles, themes, anti-delete. The practical differences are update cadence, theme-store size, and UI defaults. GB WhatsApp has the larger user base and more frequent anti-ban updates; Alex mod has a smaller but active following. The unofficial-client trade-offs (manual updates, small ban risk) apply equally to both.
Which is the official GB WhatsApp website?
There is no single "official" website — GB WhatsApp is an unofficial mod, not a company product, so anyone can host the APK. That is exactly why source trust matters. Look for a site that publishes a VirusTotal scan link for the exact file, states the version and file hash, updates promptly after each release, and is honest about the ban risk. Treat any site that hides those details, or claims to be "the official app", with caution.
Is GB WhatsApp safe to use?
The specific APK on this page is VirusTotal-clean (64/64 engines) — that confirms the file contains no known malware. "Safe" still has limits: GB WhatsApp is an unofficial client, so a small account-ban risk remains regardless of the file being clean. For a full breakdown of what the scan does and does not prove, see our dedicated guide at /is-gb-whatsapp-safe/.
How do I know a GB WhatsApp download is genuine?
Three checks. One: the site should link a VirusTotal report for the exact file you are downloading, not a generic claim. Two: the stated version should match the latest release (currently v18.80) — a much older version is a red flag. Three: the download should be a direct .apk, not a "downloader" app or a chain of redirects through ad pages. The build on this page meets all three.
Alternatives to GB WhatsApp
GB WhatsApp is not the only option. Here is an honest, neutral look at the main alternatives so you can pick what fits your priorities.
-
Official WhatsApp
Maximum safety & support
No ban risk, Play Store updates, no extra features. The right choice for critical numbers.
-
FM WhatsApp
Similar mod, different team
Comparable feature set to GB WhatsApp from a different developer. Same unofficial-client trade-offs apply.
-
WhatsApp Plus
Customisation focus
Long-running mod known for theming. Again, an unofficial client — use a secondary number.
-
WhatsApp Business
Small business basics
Official app with auto-reply and catalog. Limited vs mods but fully supported and Play Store-distributed.
